The advancement from antibody and DNA/RNA discovery to the development of therapeutic antibodies and aptamers has taken more than a hundred years. This article discusses some of the key milestones and challenges in the development of antibody- and aptamer-based therapeutics, provides a historical timeline of key events, and considers some possibilities for the next new milestone in the development of therapeutic aptamers.
